Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu is the target of an impeachment case brought by the Edo House of Assembly, which charges him of perjury and leaking government secrets.
This action is considered to be the most recent phase in the continuing conflict between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, which intensified following Shaibu’s announcement that he will run for governor of Edo.
According to reports, Obaseki is supporting Asue Ighodalo, the former chairman of Sterling Bank, who is running for governor on September 21, 2024, as the Peoples Democratic Party’s nominee.
In spite of Shaibu’s decision to abstain from the primary and his subsequent declaration of victory at an alternate primary, Ighodalo was acknowledged as the legitimate winner by the PDP national leadership, who also granted him a Certificate of Return.
Shaibu’s request that the PDP provide a Certificate of Return from the national secretariat in Abuja last week, along with unsuccessful attempts at reconciliation, came before the Edo State House of Assembly announced that he would be impeached.
According to Charity Aiguobarueghian, the Majority Leader of the House, Shaibu was accused of lying and disclosing government secrets in a petition signed by 21 of the 24 members.
The Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, gave the House Clerk instructions to serve Shaibu with the impeachment notice. Shaibu has seven days to reply.
Shaibu has not committed any crimes that would warrant Shaibu’s impeachment, according to the Conference of Registered Political Parties in Edo State, which criticized the impeachment attempt.
